  • There are many areas of connection between human health and our environment. A recent report from CIFOR (the Center for International Forestry Research) discusses the links between tropical forests and human health. (Note: The senior author, Dr. Colfer, will be attending the Boston System Dynamics Society meeting).

Are there areas for cooperation between the Health SIG and our Environment SIG?

  • Hi Richard

I agree there is plenty of opportunity for collaboration between Health and Environment....thanks for posting this to the HPSIG Snippets page. I recent viewed the videocast from the Complex Systems Approaches to Public HEalth Day 2 with Mercedes Pascual's work on Epidemics and Environment Complex Systems Approaches to Population Health Conference University of Michigan May 30-31 Videocast Day 1 http://videocast.nih.gov/Summary.asp?file=13867 Videocast Day 2 http://videocast.nih.gov/Summary.asp?file=13869 Nate Osgood and I have a particular interest in multiscale modeling including combining SD and AB and will be running a Thursday workshop at the ISDCBoston conference on this. This approach could be usefully applied to interaction between health and environment. In chasing up Mercedes Pascual's work I also came across many interesting articles in the journal EcoHealth. http://www.ecohealth.net/ I also have a particular interest in working with people in Thailand in health policy modeling where the interaction between environment and health is very relevant A few suggestions for fostering collaboration:

    • 1. Suggest a combined Environment SIG and HEalth Sunday HPSIG Session for the Athens conference. This is 3 hours and the highlight of the HPSIG year. (It's on chronic illness on Sunday 29th July in Boston)
    • 2. Begin to work together on a project/paper. Nate and I thought something on malaria might be good.... Of course there are many other possibilities.
