The Stacks

These sections of the library are not assumed to be exclusive. There are views of health and healthcare that may, and do, fit into multiple categories. The Health System Dynamics Wikipedia is well suited to such ambiguity; the use of links makes cross-referencing quite easy. For instance, the original HSD Wikipedia root page is one such view.

Notwithstanding, if you think there are useful categories for models that do not fit under any of the above categories, feel free to add a category below. Please consider how others will think of your model before creating new categories.

The Field Model of Health

Evans, Barer, and Marmor described disease/illness (and injury) and its interaction with healthcare as a dynamic in which various factors influenced the incidence of disease, to which the primary reponse is the moblization of healthcare resources. As the "outside"factors caused more disease, more healthcare resources were sought, and the pressure on technology and capacity increased.

Generally speaking, use these sections for information and data related to the dynamics of disease and the design and utilization of healthcare resources as a response to disease/illness and injury. Includes:

Disease (Illness and Injury)

Includes topics such as:

  • Epidemiology
  • Natural progression of illness
  • Illness burden in populations
  • Aeging and Future Health Scenarios (Cross-listed in the Whole System section)
  • Chronic Disease
  • Epidemics and Biosurveillance
  • Medicines and Pharmaceuticals
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse (Cross-listed under Individual Behavior and Individual Biology)

Healthcare Design and Delivery

Includes topics such as:

  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Health System Performance
  • Hospital Operations and Management
  • Patient Flows and Capacity Planning
  • Program Management and Evaluation
  • Safety and Quality
  • Technology Diffusion
  • Workforce and HEalth Manpower Supply and Requirements

Evans, Barer, and Marmor go on to develop a set of relationships that more robustly explore the influences on the overall illness burden of a population. This part of their model acknowledges that there are factors overwhich individuals (and/or populations) have no control and factors over which they have some degree of control, ranging from low to high.

Evans, Barer, and Marmor argue that resources that are focused on improvements in health (as opposed to primary used to fund healthcare) will resylt in an improvement in a population's health and functionality, and its well-being and prosperity.

Whole System Dynamics (Health as a System)

The Evans, Barer, Marmor Field Model of Health is, in effect, the whole system of health (health as a system). This section of the library is for content that relates to health as a system rather than any one dimension of the Field Model of Health.
